“Leil Shishi” & Friday “To’ameha” – Do they enhance Shabbos or detract from it?

What draws men to these gatherings?
How do they impact the home — especially when alcohol is involved?
What is the halachic basis for tasting food before Shabbos?
What are the halachic concerns with entering Shabbos intoxicated or eating too close to Shabbos?
What should an ideal Erev Shabbos look like?

I really appreciate your recent show on Toameha. I have fount it to be a growing unfortunate problem. I remember some of the less observant crowd would do pre Mincha food and drink erev shabbos as a way to encourage people to go to minyan. Somehow now people do the same thing under a pretense of halacha. This actually bothers me alot more, when they use misguided halacha to encourage isurim. I believe that if someone wants to do something incorrect, at least be honest about it as then there is room for growth. When people think they are being halachik, they have no reason to want to change, something we are unfortunately seeing being common place in many areas of Jewish life.
